A castle name on a quarry in Aberdeenshire suggests stone was taken from a place once strong enough to hold a fortress. The land may have given up its shape in layers, brick by brick, room by room. What is left is a hole where pride went to be broken into gravel.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Balfluig Castle, Quarry as Sand and Gravel Workings (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
