Balconie Castle guarded one side of Cromarty Firth beside Castlecraig, forming a paired defence that local memory still repeats. Alexander, Earl of Ross issued documents there in 1439 and 1440, while John, Earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles used Balkeny in 1473. The medieval castle reappeared in a 1297 letter to Edward I, and Queen Mary granted its St Monan chaplainry to Sir William Munro in 1551. A later castle fell around 1868, and the 19th-century Balconie House has now been demolished, leaving only the firth, the opposite shore and the shape of what once watched it.
