Baconsthorpe Castle began as a fortified manor for John Heydon I, an ambitious lawyer feared across Norfolk, who raised tall defences against his many enemies. His descendants softened the hostility into elegant courtyard living, complete with a deer park and decorative mere, until spending beyond their means forced them to mortgage the property. Sir John Heydon III lost favour during the English Civil War and began demolishing the castle in 1650 to sell its stonework, leaving behind a moated ruin where the outer gatehouse remained occupied until a turret collapsed in 1920.
