Ayton Castle, St Abb's Well is a medieval holy well in the Scottish Borders, old enough to predate the castle itself. Women may have knelt at its water before marriage or after birth, trusting the well to give what medicine could not. The castle rose later, taking the well's name and claiming its sanctity for its own walls.
