Ayr Castle stood near the River Ayr as a royal tower from the 12th century until it vanished before the Cromwellian occupation. It endured Norwegian capture, English garrisons, French troops and repeated destruction, yet no stone still rises above the ground. The missing castle is easier to picture when its absence is credited to war, decay and time rather than invented memory.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ayr Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Ayr Castle was built in the 13th century, likely by the de Ayr family or a local lord under the Scottish crown. It is historically significant as it controlled a key location in the southwest of Scotland and was involved in regional conflicts, including the Wars of Scottish Independence.
