This black commemorative plaque records: Site of Austin Friars established here 1325, dissolved 1538. John Stone, executed for resisting Henry VIII, was a brother of this house.
John Stone, a member of the Austin Friars in Canterbury, was executed in 1538 for refusing to accept King Henry VIII as the Supreme Head of the Church of England, making him one of the Carthusian Martyrs remembered for their resistance during the English Reformation.
