This stone commemorative plaque records: H.R.H. The Duke of Sussex with Lady Augusta Murray and Colonel d'Este resided here in the Summer of 1794
The Duke of Sussex was a son of King George III known for his liberal views and support of reform; Lady Augusta Murray was his long-term companion despite their relationship being morganatic; Sir Augustus d'Este, their son, is remembered as a grandson of King George III and a sufferer of inherited porphyria.
