Auckland Castle Park is a registered Grade II* landscape in County Durham, built as the country residence of the Bishops of Durham from Norman times. It still holds a deer park, old trees, a partly canalised River Gaunless and the 1760 Deer House, where the bishop may have dined, watched the hunt or let his guests play among animals. The park is not a polished showpiece; it is a lived-in estate where faith, power and leisure moved through open land.
