Castle Gilmour never needed walls because the earth itself rose to hold the family name. In Dumfries and Galloway, that much of a mound still stands where human hands shaped soil into a castle, though no date or stone remains to mark the exact moment. The ground remembers the shape even when every human name has faded from it.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Auchengruith, 'castle Gilmour' as Mound (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
