Athelhampton House is a Tudor castle in Dorset built from 1485 for Sir William Martyn, whose descendants later divided it into separate dwellings before owners repeatedly bought, sold and restored the fragmented shares. The house absorbed tenant farmers, a Russian cubist artist and visits from Thomas Hardy, while its Great Hall still holds heraldic glass and a mahogany organ. It remains open as a historic residence, carrying layers of marriage, debt, creativity and neglect into one enduring building.
