This brown commemorative plaque records: Tameside Metropolitan Borough Fletcher Street Ashton Parish Workhouse 1730-1851 This marks the site of the Ashton Parish Workhouse. It was replaced by the much larger Union Workhouse on Fountain Street. Unveiled by Councillor Jackie Lane 10th September 2011 Recorded plaque organisation: Tameside Metropolitan Borough.
The Ashton Parish Workhouse served as a place for poor relief in Tameside from 1730 to 1851, reflecting the historical practice of parish-based support for the destitute before the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834.
