Ashton Keynes Castle was a 12th-century ringwork built by the Keynes family, but its military life was short. The de Keynes soon turned the fortress into a manor, leaving behind floor tiles and pottery rather than battle scars. What remains are dilapidated earthworks and a spring-fed ditch, quiet proof that even strong walls must sometimes stop being strong and become home.
