Camber holds an artillery castle and earthworks built to watch the Rother mouth, where stone and soil still point toward the sea. The list names the place but does not invite entry, so the castle keeps its own counsel. Men may have stood at those works when guns were new and the coast felt exposed. They are gone now, leaving the earth shaped like a weapon that no longer fires.
