Arthur Keaveney

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Arthur Keaveney was born in Galway on 8 July 1951, the western port that later supplied the lived memory behind his scholarly work on Roman and Persian history. He studied at St Joseph's Patrician College and University College Galway before carrying that Atlantic training into British universities, where he became known for Sulla, Lucullus and the Persian invasions of Greece. A historian from Galway sounds like someone who could still hear the sea in the margins of ancient empire, even when he wrote about courts and armies far from Ireland.

Why this person is known: British historian (1951-2020)
