Arnage Castle is a late 16th-century Z-plan tower house in Aberdeenshire where wide-mouthed gun-loops still flank the original blocked doorway. The Cheyne family held the lands until 1643, but later owners kept altering the structure, adding chamfered sandstone windows in the early 1700s and granite-jammed openings in 1860. These changes gentrified the martial bones rather than erasing them, leaving the west and east sides exposed to show how defence repeatedly became domestic comfort.
