Ardross Castle is a 19th Century country house in Highland, Scotland. Sir Alexander Matheson bought the estate in 1845 and transformed sixty thousand acres into working farmland, pleasure gardens and woodland. He built broad gravel walks along the Alness River, planted thousands of acres of trees and increased the number of agricultural tenants from one hundred and nine to more than five hundred. The castle itself grew from a hunting lodge into a Scots Baronial house with thirty extra rooms, designed by Alexander Ross for the man who also chaired the Highland Railway.
