Ardross Castle rose near the Fife sea in the fourteenth century, a stone anchor for the Dishington family before it changed hands twice. Its vaulted basement still breaks the ground like a hidden ribcage, waiting for someone to imagine the heat, noise and fear that filled it. The castle is ruined now, but it is not empty; it is holding its shape in the dark, patient for a witness.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ardross Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Ardross Castle was built in the 13th century by the Clan Mackay, a powerful Highland Scottish clan. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the northern Scottish Highlands and as an example of medieval defensive architecture in the region.
