Ardencaple Castle began as a medieval stronghold for MacAulay lairds before Campbells of Argyll rebuilt it into an elegant country house. Debt stripped the MacAulays piece by piece until the roof fell and they abandoned the halls, while later owners transformed the estate through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Now only a forty-five-foot tower remains on the plateau edge, guiding ships along the Firth of Clyde with a light that turns ruin into usefulness.
