Architectural fragments in Newcastle (rahoon Par.) preserve sixteen broken features, including a 1664 plaque by Col. John Spenser, vine-leaf doorway pieces and fireplaces dated 1599, 1620 and 1630. Rev. P. Hynes gathered them in the earlier 20th century, pulling marble and stone out of oblivion before they became dust. They stand as a mosaic of lost rooms: each chip a door, window or hearth remembering the shape of buildings no longer complete.

A collection of architectural fragments was brought together in the earlier 20th century by the Rev. P. Hynes, Professor of Celtic Archaeology, University College Galway (SMR file). They comprise the remains of sixteen features: (1) a large rectangular plaque, dated 1664, by Col. John Spenser, (2) two spandrels from a doorway dated 1600, (3) nine fragments from a 16th century doorway with vine-leaf enrichment, (4) a two-light window (probably from St James’ chapel), (5) two sections of a relieving arch (possibly also from St James’ chapel), (6) a keystone from a fireplace dated 1599, (7) a keystone from a fireplace dated 1620, (8) two fragments from a fireplace mantle dated 1630 and (9) two sections of an undated fireplace mantle carved with the name and arms of Laurence Deane, (10) a window hood-mould for a two-light window which might be associated with one of two spandrels (11, 12), (13) a window/door head, (14) a slop stone, (15) a large circular basin-like object with chamfered under-surface decorated with typical 15th/16th century motifs and (16) a single stop from a door jamb.
