What is recorded here

No one knows which roof the finial crowned, but it still points upward above the holy well in Clontubbrid graveyard. It may have belonged to the vanished Clontubbrid church or travelled from Freshford, carrying a lost roofline into a new purpose. The well keeps its water, the stone keeps its edge, and the uncertainty gives the place more life than a certain answer would.

A stone finial found in the graveyard (KK009-044002-) which comes from a 10th/11th-century church, possibly Clontubbrid church (KK009-044001-) which is no longer visible at ground level. The finial has been placed at the apex of the E gable of the stone structure that covers the holy well (KK009-044004-) within the graveyard. It is described with the church record for Clontubbrid, though Ó Carragáin (2010, 308) suggests that the finial may have come from the early medieval church (KK013-023001-) in Freshford, c. 3km to the S.
