Architectural fragment in Clonroad Beg

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Clonroad Beg is not a separate place but a misnamed shadow of Inis Cealtra, where a Romanesque animal head still watches from Clare Museum. The head fell from the east gable of St Brigid’s church and lay buried until excavation revealed it. Its eyes are no longer directed at the sky, but they have not stopped seeing.
On display in Clare Museum, Ennis. A Romanesque carved stone animal head from the E gable of St Brigid’s church, Inis Cealtra (CL029-009006-). Found under the collapsed gable during excavations in 1970-80 (de Paor 2013, 70). Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 22 October 2014
