Architectural fragment in Church Island (iveragh By., Loughcurrane Ed)

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Four voussoirs lie buried in the chancel of St Finan's church, waiting for a hand proud enough to build an arch around them. They are not decorative; they are structural, heavy and deliberate. The island has kept them long enough to prove that patience belongs to stone, not people.
For descriptive account see O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 316-22, no. 974, one of '…four voussoirs…' which lie in the chancel of St Finan's church). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
