Architectural fragment in Church Island (iveragh By., Loughcurrane Ed)

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

You can still see four stone ribs from a lost arch inside Church Island. They belong to St Finan's church and have watched the water for centuries. The sea took the building but the island kept its bones.
For descriptive account see O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 316-22, no. 974, one of '…four voussoirs…' which lie in the chancel of St Finan's church). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
