Architectural fragment in Church Island (iveragh By., Loughcurrane Ed)

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

St. Finan's Church, built on an island in the middle of a lake, still stands with walls high enough to touch. The second of three carved stones from that church survives as a separate fragment, removed from the main structure but still carrying its shape. A church on a lake is not a ordinary building; it is a claim that the boundary between land and water does not limit human belief.
For descriptive account see O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 316-22, no. 974, St. Finan's Church '…Three carved stones…', no. (2)). This stone is now in the care of the OPW (National Monuments). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
