What is recorded here
In the kitchen of Ballykilty House (CL042-023----) is a massive limestone fireplace (c. 3m by 2m) with joggled keystone on which is carved the following inscription: '1614 John McNamara and / Onora Clanchi bilded / theis cheimneis in the / year of our Lord.' The inscription was cleary intended to fill the surface area of the keystone but it is poorly laid out with a number of the letters bundled together. The mason was forced to run the final 'in the' on the third line onto the adjoinging stone. This fireplace was probably taken from from Dangan Brack Castle (CL034-138----) and inserted into Ballykilty House in the 18th century (pers. comm. R. Ua Cróinín).
