Sir Anthony Ashley-Cooper, later the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, was a prominent British philanthropist and social reformer; his witnessing of a pauper's funeral as a youth inspired a lifelong commitment to improving conditions for the poor and oppressed in Victorian England.
