Anglian Tower black plaque

Commemorative plaque

What is recorded here

This black commemorative plaque records: Anglian Tower This building is the lower storey of a tower built into a breach in the 4th-century Roman fortress wall perhaps in the reign of King Edwin 616-632 A.D. It was hidden under Danish and later ramparts and rediscovered in 1839. Recorded plaque organisation: York Civic Trust.
Anglian Tower represents a significant architectural remnant from the early medieval period, possibly commissioned by King Edwin of Northumbria around 620 AD, offering insight into the transition between Roman and Anglo-Saxon Britain.
