This commemorative plaque records: In memory of John Baird and Andrew Hardie who were publicly hanged here on 8th September 1820 for the cause of justice and truth
Andrew Hardie and John Baird were Scottish weavers and leaders in the Radical War of 1820; they are remembered for their advocacy of workers' rights and democratic reforms, despite being executed for their roles in the uprising.
