Andrew Carnegie and Jedburgh Public Library blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Jedburgh Public Library. Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American philanthropist, founded a library in the High Street in 1884. This quickly became too small and Carnegie paid for a larger replacement here in the Castlegate. He attended the opening in 1900. His motto, Let there be light, is carved into the stonework.
