This blue commemorative plaque records: Carnegie Library. Andrew Carnegie funded 2,811 free libraries around the world. This was the very first of them opened in 1883 at a total cost of £8000. The architect was JC Walker. James Shearer extended the building in 1914-21 and it was further extended in 1993.
Andrew Carnegie, a steel magnate turned philanthropist, significantly advanced public education by funding thousands of libraries worldwide, exemplified by this first Carnegie Library. James Campbell Walker was the architect who designed this pioneering institution, setting a standard for library architecture and community service.
