Alnwick Castle is a surviving Anglo-Scottish border fortress in Northumberland, built after the Norman Conquest and held continuously by one noble line. Marcus brings his mother there because her family lost a man in one of its rebellions. She touches the gatehouse and says that stone remembers every choice made beside it. The castle does not answer, but it stops pretending to be decoration.
