Alloa Tower rose in the 1300s as one of Scotland's largest medieval homes, guarding Erskine power until fire consumed the mansion in 1800 while the solid tower survived. Inside, original oak beams, a pit dungeon and a domed Italianate staircase still hold the shape of that lost world. The Erskines guarded young Mary, Queen of Scots, and their portraits still watch the rooms where they lived.
