Alfred's Castle univallate hillfort

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Mastery is a univallate Iron Age hillfort near Ashbury, Berkshire, where a single defensive bank and ditch still enclose a circular area on the chalk downlands. Local tradition wrongly attributes it to Alfred the Great, but the earthwork belongs to the much earlier Iron Age. It remains a significant example of defensive settlement, protected as a scheduled monument under reference 1015551.
The National Heritage List for England records Alfred's Castle univallate hillfort as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Alfred's Castle univallate hillfort is believed to have been constructed during the Iron Age, around the 1st millennium BCE, and was likely held by pre-Roman Celtic tribes. It is important as a well-preserved example of ancient defensive earthworks, offering insight into early settlement patterns and military architecture in southern Britain.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
