This bronze commemorative plaque records: Alexander Simpson, 1832-1922 Civil Engineer. Engineer and later Chairman of the Glasgow District Subway under whose direction it was planned and constructed in 1891-1896. Originally cable hauled, the Subway was electrified in 1935 and re-named the Underground. It was modernised in 1977-1980 Recorded plaque organisation: Institution of Civil Engineers.
Alexander Simpson was a prominent civil engineer who oversaw the planning and construction of Glasgow's District Subway from 1891 to 1896, significantly contributing to urban transportation infrastructure in Scotland.
