Brigadier General Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven, later the 1st Earl of Gowrie, was a distinguished British Army officer awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the Battle of Omdurman during the Sudan Campaign in 1898. He served in various military and diplomatic roles, including as Governor-General of Australia from 1936 to 1945.
