Alex Maskey

Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland gave Alex Maskey the stage where he became the first republican Lord Mayor in 2002 and later guided the restored Assembly through pandemic chaos. He remained Speaker beyond his intended departure because parties stalled, carrying him through Queen Elizabeth II’s condolences and King Charles III’s coronation until February 2024.
