Albro Castle is a former workhouse completed in 1840 for the poor of twenty-six parishes, yet by 1845 it crowded 441 people into a space designed for 120. The building contained vagrant cells with grading grills and chutes for breaking stone, while inspectors later called it the worst in Wales. It closed in 1935, but in 1944 eight hundred men of the 111th Ordnance Company stayed there before leaving at night on D-day bound for Normandy.
