Alberbury Castle is a ruined red sandstone stronghold built in the thirteenth century by Fulk FitzWarin to block Welsh raids along the River Severn. Llewellyn the Great razed it in 1223, but FitzWarin rebuilt it with a stone bailey wall in 1226, proving the family refused to lose their marcher border post. The castle may have been abandoned by the mid-fourteenth century after the FitzWarins moved their seat to Whittington, leaving behind a church tower they had founded earlier as a lookout.
