Covenanters, supporters of Presbyterianism, fought against the forces of King James VII of Scotland at Aird's Moss in 1680; the government forces won, leading to the capture and execution of several Covenanters. The battle and its aftermath highlighted the persecution faced by religious dissenters in 17th-century Scotland.
