Aiket Castle rose from a 1479 charter granted to Alexander Cunninghame, marking the birth of a defensive tower house on elevated land beside a river bend. Robert Cunninghame of Aiket later stained that history with murder and poison before being shot near the walls in 1586, yet the stone survived his forfeiture and the widow’s 1592 remodelling. The Clow family rebuilt the ruined shell in 1976, blending medieval and Georgian features into a coherent home that still stands two miles southwest of Dunlop.
