Aboyne Castle is a farmhouse and farmstead in East Mains, Aberdeenshire, but no date has been written to it. The name castle sounds like pride when the body is a kitchen, a yard and a roof for ordinary life. Perhaps a farm took a castle name because a castle had gone, or because a family wanted the word to sound bigger in market. The house may have worn that name like a coat too wide, comfortable in the end.

Aboyne Castle was originally a medieval stronghold associated with the Leslie family, later earls of Rothes, and is remembered for its strategic role in the region during the 16th and 17th centuries. It is also notable as the birthplace of Robert Leslie, 1st Earl of Rothes, a key figure in Scottish and British political history.
