What is recorded here

Aboyne Castle stands in Aberdeenshire as a layered residence where a possible medieval peel and a horizontal motehill castle merged into one defensible home. The Tarland Burn once fed a wide boggy loch around the site, turning the land into a natural moat for the people who lived there. Later changes buried the original plan, yet the northwest tower still rises through the rebuilt fabric to mark the place where defence and domestic life collided.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Aboyne Castle as Clearance Cairn(s) (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Aboyne Castle is a 16th-century tower house located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, originally built by the Forbes family, who were prominent local landowners. It is remembered for its historical association with the Forbes clan and its strategic role in the region during the medieval period.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
