Aberystwyth Castle

Castle

What is recorded here

A diamond-shaped castle of siltstone rose in Aberystwyth after Edward I defeated Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, yet Welsh fighters burned it during the next war before James of Saint George completed it in 1289. It survived Madog ap Llywelyn's siege because supplies reached it by sea, became a mint for Charles I, and finally lost much of its structure when Oliver Cromwell slighted it in 1649.
The National Monuments Record of Wales records Aberystwyth Castle as Castle from the Medieval period. The saved point comes from the official national record. Inclusion does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Aberystwyth Castle was built by the Normans in the late 13th century, primarily to consolidate control over the region following the conquest of Wales. It is important as a key military and administrative stronghold in the history of Welsh resistance and English expansion.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
