Abbot’s Cottage and John Hammond black plaque

This black commemorative plaque records: The Abbot’s Cottage, circa 1400. At the suppression of the Monastery of Battle Abbey A.D. 1538 John Hammond, the Abbot retired to this house. Here he lived for eight years until his death when he was buried by his own wish in “The Yle Callyd Saynt Kateryns Yle” in the Parish Church.

John Hammond was the last Abbot of Battle Abbey before its dissolution under Henry VIII's reign; he retired to Abbot’s Cottage after the monastery's suppression in 1538, where he lived until his death eight years later.
