What is recorded here
Bodiam Castle stands as a sharp-edged quadrangle beside the Rother, its millpond and medieval crofts still visible beneath a World War II pillbox. The castle was built to be seen as much as defended, its angles and water giving it the air of a place designed for pride as often as for protection. Even the small wartime bunker belongs to the story, marking how the same ground kept being claimed by new fears.
The National Heritage List for England records A quadrangular castle and its landscaped setting, an associated millpond, medieval crofts and cultivation earthworks, and a World War II pillbox at Bodiam as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Bodiam Castle was built in the late 14th century by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a prominent knight, as a defensive structure during the Hundred Years' War. It is remembered for its well-preserved quadrangular design and its association with medieval military architecture.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
